What PPE should be used when working with diamond tools?

Advice on the use of personal protective equipment is given by the manufacturer, often in the form of pictograms on the product, package or safety advice leaflets. These indications should always be followed.

Anyway, in principle, the following PPE should always be worn:

  • Eye protection: For hand-held machines or workpieces, goggles or full-face shields with a minimum protection level of EN166 Grade B class 1 are recommended.
  • Ear protection:
    • With at least 35db/ level III protection, complying with EN 352
    • Required for machines that produce noise levels greater than 85 decibels
  • Hand protection: A minimum protection level of EN 388 Category 2 is recommended.
  • Respiratory protection:
    • Use masks with an FFP3 filter as a minimum
    • The use of respirators complying with EN149 is recommended for dry grinding processes even if extraction systems are provided.
  • Head protection: Always wear head protection adequate to the risks in the workplace, such as helmets.
  • Hi-vis protection: Always wear hi-visibility clothing, which must be in accordance with the standard EN ISO 20471.

Signals of the PPEs – following the standard ISO 7010:2019 (Graphical symbols — Safety colours and safety signs — Registered safety signs) – required in the job site must be placed there.
