Understanding the workplace/jobsite conditions

A work environment plan must be prepared before the construction site is established. A construction work environment coordinator must ensure that this happens.
The purpose is that the work environment plan will then be used throughout the construction phase for the planning of a safe and secure work environment as possible, always ensuring that the company and the construction site comply with the work environment legislation.
A work environment plan must contain:
- The rules to be applied at the construction site.
- A description of how the work environment work is to be organized.
- A description of work specific environment measures, for example: work with risk of falls, work with certain chemical or biological substances, work in the vicinity of high voltage lines, etc.
Such a plan must be elaborated taking into account that workplace conditions must be the following ones:
- Clean and tidy working environment.
- Adequate working space, good lighting and heating should be considered.
- Inside buildings, partitions/ barriers or separate grinding booths will provide an exclusion zone for additional protection to other personnel nearby.
- Floors and the working area should be maintained in a tidy condition and free from obstructions to prevent slips, trips and falls.
- Adequate protective equipment must be foreseen at the construction site to avoid accidents – e.g., fall protection, dust limitation systems, etc.
- All relevant local, national or international regulations must be followed. In this regard, itis important to ensure that only safe diamond tools following the safety standards such as EN13236 are used.
All planning of the construction work should take place with regard to the work environment and safety and be based on the risk assessment and the work environment plan that has been drawn up to minimize the risk of ill health or accidents.
The work environment plan and easy-to-understand information about safety and preventive measures in the project must be provided to everyone who works on the construction site. If necessary, special training should be arranged.
Additionally, the workplace must be signalled with the safety signs for accident prevention, fire protection, health hazard information and emergency evacuation included in the standard ISO 7010:2019 (Graphical symbols — Safety colours and safety signs — Registered safety signs).
