Guidelines for training diamond tools workers

All persons involved in the handling and storage, mounting and use of diamond segmented tools must be adequately trained to conduct their duties.

Training should include basic requirements of the process, as well as how to specify and order abrasives. Additionally, this training should include training for mounting products as a fundamental component.

In any case, the following considerations should be taken into account when training new operators:

  • Always brief the trainee on the method statement and risk assessment.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s operator manual for all tools.
  • Demonstrate how the task/s should be carried out safely and to a good standard.
  • At all times during training, monitor the new operator during the working process.

It is essential that trainers are familiar with the up-to-date knowledge of abrasive products, machines, methods and requirements, standards and codes of practice and other requirements.

Furthermore, in addition to being trained, all persons involved in mounting products should also be certified by their employer as being competent to perform their duties.

It is recommended to keep a register of trained and appointed personnel and to review it periodically.

It is, however, necessary to always check if the country where the job will be performed has any standard or regulation in this respect. In such a case, all operators must be trained, at least according to those guidelines. Consulting national associations in those countries where they are active can be very helpful in order to get guidance on this subject.

Additionally, it should be pointed out that some manufacturers provide training for the use of their specific products. In no way can it replace the training described above, but it is a great way for operators to become familiar with the equipment they will use.
