EU Sets 2040 climate target, cement industry responds with roadmap ambition
4/07/2025
On July 2nd, the European Commission announced a 2040 climate target of 90% greenhouse gas emissions reduction compared to 1990 levels—paving the way to full climate neutrality by 2050. The target is part of the EU’s broader Clean Industrial Deal, emphasizing sectoral flexibility and implementation.
CEMBUREAU, representing the European cement industry, welcomed the announcement and reaffirmed its commitment to decarbonisation. Its updated Net Zero Roadmap aims for a 78% emissions reduction by 2040, highlighting the need for competitive policy measures, infrastructure support, and regulatory clarity.
For the concrete drilling and sawing industry, this signals accelerating transformation across the value chain. Investments in low-carbon technologies, alternative fuels, and circular material use are becoming increasingly central. As a vital part of the construction sector, the concrete industry’s successful transition will be crucial in achieving Europe’s green goals.
