Demolition activities continue on the Morandi bridge

On February 27th, the work to demolish the Polcevera Viaduct in Genoa, better known as “Ponte Morandi”, resumed at rapid pace, by carrying out a test consisting of the fall of a concrete block (New Jersey guardrail) weighing about 5 tons, which had previously been removed from the pylon number 8.

The block was made to fall freely in order to measure the amount of produced vibrations through the use of five vibrometers. Immediately afterward, another block of concrete was dropped onto a “stabilized bed” composed of a layer of aggregates over the area of fall.

To carry out the test, in this latter case, a special piece of equipment was used that tilted the New Jersey block to the point of causing it to fall from the deck.

Meanwhile, at the Fincantieri plant in Castellammare di Stabia, the first segment of what will be the new Polcevera Viaduct has been completed, confirming how the work is proceeding quickly.

The demolition of the remaining part of the Morandi Bridge will be completed during summer and, according to the pre-established schedule, immediately afterward the reconstruction phase will start.
