How to mount diamond tools for safe work?

Each diamond segmented tool will have its own specific assembly process, which should be well known to the person who will be doing the mounting task. In addition, it is also essential for that person to be familiar with the manufacturer’s operating manual, in order to be aware of the particularities that the brand’s products may have.

In any case, below are some general guidelines, applicable to all tools, for their mounting:

  • Products should only be mounted on machines that are fit for the design purpose of the product being used including the correct bore size, if it is used on a machine that isn’t fit for purpose there is a risk it could cause harm or be dangerous.
  • Before mounting the product on the machine, ensure that the operating speed of the machine does not exceed the maximum operating speed if marked on the product.
  • Where the product needs to be mounted in a specific way, e.g. direction of rotation or direction of run, this will be marked on the product.
  • When threading a drill bit onto a drill motor the threads must be checked on the spindle and the drill bit as these may be damaged or contaminated with dirt which will stop the bit from being screwed onto the spindle.
  • Always use the correct tools to fit a blade or drill bit. Never use the motor to wind the core bit into the thread.
  • When mounting a blade, you must first check you have the right blade specification with the correct centre hole/s, depending on the saw and supplier these have various configurations.
  • When mounting a blade, the centre spindle must be checked that there are no burrs and is free from distortion.
  • When mounting a blade always check that the flange plates are the same diameter in accordance with the manual.
  • The blade must not have any foreign objects attached to it which may cause the blade to work in an unsafe manner or fly off and cause harm or damage.
  • The diamond wire must be checked before wrapping or threading around the structure to see if the diamonds and rubber beads are still in full contact with the wire, if there are loose diamonds or beads then this wire must not be used as the loose beads may fly off and cause harm or damage. Be sure to follow the clamping instructions to connect the ends of the wire.
  • Ensure that the correct fastening nuts and bolts are used and are in good condition.
  • All guarding removed to fit the wheel should be replaced before starting the wheel motor.
