13/01/2025

The “Royal Sovereign Lighthouse Decommissioning” is the job with which Robore Cuts Ltd enters the Diamond Award 2025. Finnish in November 2024, it is one of The UK’s oldest specialist Diamond Drilling and sawing companies operating since 1986 with its head office in South London.
The Royal Sovereign Lighthouse was first commissioned on the 6th of September 1971 and was operational until Trinity House decommissioned it in June 2019 following 48 years of service. It was decided that the entire structure needed to be removed to prevent it becoming a hazard to shipping. Because of that, they were given the task in 2023. As this had not been completed before, they had to design a completely new system that would allow safe access to the pier.
The cutting frame went through several designs with the final one being agreed at some 27 metres tall and 9 metres in diameter, to completely encapsulate the RC structure. Also, by diamond wire saw cutting the tower they minimized the environmental impact to marine life. Moreover, each section was cut free it was lifted clear of the works area, and placed on a flat top barge for transport, these sections were then processed to aggregate on shore for recycling.
