Dry Cutting of Belgian Reactor: a case study
13/06/2023

The IACDS Annual Convention 2023 has brought with it a handful of interesting and relevant conferences. While all of them were somehow related to the drilling and cutting industry, the variety of topics was truly amazing.
One of those conferences, in particular, dealt with the topic of Dry cutting of Belgian Reactor 3’s Bioshield. It was presented by Bart Geerkens, from INTERBORING. This presentation is a case study of diamond cutting and drilling.
The Belgian Reactor 3 was a PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor), built as a pilot project to construct the other Belgian Reactors. The goal of this reactor was mainly to enhance the knowledge in Europe for the construction, operation and dismantling of a nuclear reactor (PWR).
This biological shield consists of concrete walls around the reactor, protecting the external environment from radiation.
The dismantling of the bioshield of the BR3 is a perfect example of innovative projects, with a heavy focus on safety during the execution.
You can read the full study in the IACDS Annual Convention 2023 Conference Book. It’s available on our website: don’t miss out on it!
