Do’s and don’ts of using diamond segmented tools

23/01/2024

The safe use of diamond-segmented tools is a poignant question in the industry. While these types of tools have numerous applications, they can cause accidents when used incorrectly.

So, what are the guidelines of their correct appliance?

Some of those are:

  • Only trained and competent people can use the products.
  • If coolant is to be used on the product, make sure it is the right coolant and there is enough flow to flush the debris (slurry) and keep it cool and working to its maximum capacity.
  • Some products may not need coolant and can be used as a dry method of cutting, if this operation is to be carried out, a suitable and efficient dry vacuum must be attached to the equipment to remove any harmful dust particles. Removing the dust from the guard/machine will aid in reducing overheating and keeping the product cooler and the blade balanced.
  • Never make contact with rotating blades or core barrels.
  • Make sure that the operating speed of the machine does not exceed the maximum operating speed of the product.
  • All products will wear down once they are being used on any material.
  • Regular checks must be carried out on the wear of the segment.
  • Avoid applying any side force to diamond saws when cutting.
  • If using the product dry, never let it overheat or load. When cutting wet ensure sufficient coolant flow to reduce the risk of breakage.

More of them are described in detail in the IACDS and FEPA Guide on Safe use of diamond tools. Read it for free here!
